Watson was a “small” baby angel. He was born prematurely at 25 weeks gestational age. Not only did he struggle in growth, but among other things, he also had trouble sleeping. His physicians in Hong Kong had tried everything they could, but the battery of tests and exams had only meant tedious hours of waiting, possibly to no avail. By chance, we found the International Medicine service program from website of Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital (http://lnkwww/) , and were arranged to meet with Otolaryngologist Dr. Hsueh-Yu Li in Taiwan. After careful examination and evaluation, Dr. Li explained to us why Watson could not sleep well and arranged him to receive surgery – tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

The operation showed to be a great success. Before the operation, Watson had extreme difficult breathing while he slept. He would often toss and turn in bed as a result, which further worsened his sleep quality.

Currently, Watson is able to sleep peacefully till morning, with better concentration and spirits during daytime. Prior to surgery, he would choke easily when he ate, especially on water; now, he barely chokes at all. Additionally, he regained his sense of smell and taste, and even surprised his parents with his new found appetite. Furthermore, whereas Watson had shown retarded growth of only 1-2cm every year before the operation, now he has already grown 4-5cm in the year since the operation. In the past, he would have fallen/tripped even with someone holding his hands; now, he can jump and leap all by himself. Before 2 years of age, he had to rely on oxygen masks, and feared other children because they would take his mask off out of curiosity. Fortunately, he can now run and play with his classmates without needing to worry about carrying around a mask.

Needless to say, a small surgery has made a big change in this baby angels’ life. Having already fought so many obstacles so early in life and overcoming them, Watson and his family are more than confident that they can take on what the future holds.
